School Anxiety

10-12% of high school students suffer from anxiety (Tramonte & Willms, 2010).  Not only are they anxious about poor grades that stem from learning difficulties or physical disabilities, they also experience social anxiety. Other anxiety-provoking concerns expressed by children include violence in schools and their relationships with their teachers. Those children who do well in school are also affected as they may be stigmatized as overachievers. Possible outcomes are headaches, stomach aches, sleep disturbances, fingernail chewing, and bed-wetting.
